The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining national food quality by ordering firm action against violations of rice quality standards in the market. This was conveyed during a limited meeting held at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), along with ministers from the Red and White Cabinet.
One of the main agenda items of the meeting was a discussion of the results of the inspection of the quality of premium and medium-grade rice circulating in the public. The report submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, revealed serious violations of the quality standards for this staple food.
“Of the 268 rice brands inspected, 212 brands did not meet national standards. The most striking finding was the high level of broken rice, which far exceeded the established limit,” said Minister Amran.
He added that the quality of rice, which should be strictly controlled, instead demonstrated weak oversight at the distribution and production levels. President Prabowo, Amran continued, instructed that legal proceedings against violators be carried out without compromise.
“The President’s directive is very clear: take firm action against all parties involved in this fraudulent practice. Law enforcement must not stop at administrative warnings. We will take action,” the Minister of Agriculture emphasized.
This step signals that the central government under President Prabowo’s leadership will prioritize firmness in maintaining the integrity of the national food system and protecting consumers from detrimental fraudulent practices.
This rice quality control policy will also be strengthened by cross-sector involvement, including the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), the National Police Food Task Force, and the Ministry of Trade.
The government ensures that these efforts aim to stabilize the market and maintain public confidence in the quality of national food. President Prabowo also asked the public to participate in monitoring and report any irregularities in the distribution or sale of rice in the field.
